A few of our favorite things, part 2

In “The Sound of Music,” Julie Andrews sings about her favorite things: a strange assortment including raindrops on roses, bright copper kettles, cream-colored ponies, doorbells, silver white winters that melt into spring and even warm woolen mittens.

The staff here at Saratoga Living magazine has decided to share some of our favorite food spots in the area. Why? When you fill your belly with delicious dishes, you can’t ever feel that bad, bee sting or not. Here, we proudly present hot spots outside The Spa City.

Our advice to you when stressed this summer? As Lumiere from “Beauty and the Beast” would say, “It’s fine dining we suggest!”

Yono’s Restaurant

Ren Dang, Chef Yono Purnomo’s version of the traditional Indonesian braised beef dish. Yono’s twist is using short ribs braised with traditional Southeast Asian ingredients such as coconut milk, tamarind and lemongrass. It is extremely aromatic and tasty. Another Yono’s favorite is the Samascott Orchards (Kinderhook) Palm Sugar Tart. The crispy yet light and not too sweet crust is perhaps the best that I have eaten in any Capital Region restaurant.

Crave Burgers and Frozen Yogurt

This one-of-a-kind burger joint offers gourmet burgers to satisfy anyone’s adventurous taste buds. There are burgers like the Truffle, which has a red wine truffle glaze, or the Twice Baked, which includes potato skins. If you save room for frozen yogurt, you can try one of their eight rotating flavors and pick from 42 different toppings.

Iron Roost

The Iron Roost gives its diners many different options to choose from, including ‘sweet’ or ‘savory, and even items for those who are gluten-free or vegan. Personal favorites include the sweet Make-Ur-Own waffle dressed with fruit toppings and chocolate sauce, as well as the savory Steak & Eggs Waffle Wedge full of steak, scrambled eggs, sautéed mushrooms, onions and more.

The Log Jam Restaurant

The Log Jam is a restaurant I’ve loved since I was a kid. It was the place my family and I would go to celebrate special occasions, and the tradition hasn’t changed. I pretty much order the prime rib, but on the rare occasion that I decide to switch things up, I go with the crab legs.

Marino’s Pizza & Restaurant

Mario Marino has been sending his dough flying since he learned the technique in Brooklyn in the early 1960s. He opened his own place in 1970 on State Street in Schenectady. The taste is classic Neapolitan, but the style is all his own. "It’s definitely something you have to work on, not something you learn overnight," Mario says. Even his son, Dan, and longtime manager Ben Teriele are still learning how to throw dough from the master (although they look like experts to us).

Gourmet Cafe

Gourmet Cafe is a breath of fresh air in downtown Glens Falls. I have celiac disease and luckily for me, Gourmet Cafe has an amazing gluten-free menu as well as a gluten-filled one. Everything is delicious but there are two dishes I can’t live without: the penne a la vodka when I need a pasta fix, or if I’m in the mood for something light, the Mandarin chicken salad sandwich.

Amigos Cantina

This is a Mexican restaurant that my wife and I love. I really enjoy the Chile Relleno Especiale, two cheese-stuffed chile rellenos with red chili sauce, served with refried beans and salad.

Sunhee’s Farm

Seafood Scallion Pancake. Koreans consider it the perfect snack with beer. Unlike the typical scallion pancake from most stateside Korean restaurants, Sunhee’s version is lightly crisp on the outside with a tender interior. Pairing the scallion pancake with the dipping sauce provides an ‘Ooh! It’s so good’ moment (thank you, Art Ginsburg, aka Mr. Food).
