Cambridge Valley Farmer's Market: "We are small but mighty!"

Photography by Alicia Bryan   Nestled in the heart of Cambridge between the historic Cambridge Hotel (now a retirement home) and the Country Gals Café, the Cambridge Valley Farmer’s Market is a small market that is growing quickly. Jayme Muir, a former Manhattanite with roots in the region, is the new market manager. Muir, Director of the Cambridge Farmers MarketMuir, Manager of the Cambridge Farmers Market “For me, making the switch from news production in Manhattan to market managing in Cambridge has been nothing short of magical,” says Muir. “Our market prides itself in supporting local farmers and acting as a safe haven for members of the community to return back to every Sunday and collect their fresh groceries for the week ahead. As I like to say, we are small but mighty!” Muir’s appreciation of fresh local produce, as well as the beauty of Washington County, shows through her work with the farmer’s market and on her personal blog, kitchenbird.wordpress.com, where she cooks up mouth watering dishes from her finds at the market.

Comprised of 10 local vendors who come from surrounding areas, including Saratoga Springs and Manchester, Vermont, the Cambridge Valley Market sells the traditional vegetables and fruits as well as wood-fired artisan breads, handmade fair trade Woods and Whimsy personal care essentials, all-natural dog biscuits and jams, pasture-raised meat and eggs, and Saratoga Apple’s Hard Cider. The market, says Muir, has become “intensely intertwined with all of the parts that create the Cambridge community, including the Cambridge Food Co-Op, Cambridge Fire Department, Battenkill Books and the Round House Bakery and Café.” It also serves as a “non-profit organization supported by the Cambridge Valley Community Development and Preservation Partnership Inc., as well as Hubbard Hall Projects, that all run off of vendor fees and generous contributions from the community,” says Muir.
“We all love to promote one another and keep the community thriving in as many ways as possible, even if that means directing our customers to the co-op for some local cheese or letting the fire department set up a table and sell merchandise at the market. We are also incredibly thankful for all of our musicians at the market; they are all volunteers,” says Muir. “We like to show our appreciation by rounding up a basket donation from all of our vendors at the end of each market.
