Experience art down on the farm

Down a quiet side street in the village of Salem in nearby Washington County, a small lane opens into a 119-acre farm with views of Vermont's Green Mountains. But it's no ordinary farm. The expanse is Salem Art Works, also known as SAW, a sprawling education center and exhibition space with artists' studios, galleries and workshops, including a blacksmithing forge, a welding bay, an iron foundry and a wood-fired ceramics kiln. On an average summer day, SAW buzzes with activity, with visitors attending workshops on glass blowing, welding, ceramics, yoga, printmaking and landscape painting. Visitors are also welcome to visit the sculpture garden and walk on SAW's grounds and trails, which are open from dawn to dusk. The summer schedule includes open studios and pop up exhibits on Aug. 12 and Sept. 9; and "Music on the Hill" featuring Saratoga jam band Let's Be Leonard at 5 p.m. on Aug. 19 (admission by donation).
