“Field of Dreams” Celebrates Showcase of Homes Winners and Non-Profits

“If you build it, they will come,” a mysterious voice told a crowd of 300 area building professionals at the 2017 Showcase of Homes Awards Celebration and Dinner at Vapor Nightclub on Sept. 14.

The voice, inspired by the 1989 Kevin Costner film Field of Dreams, referred to the 22nd annual Showcase of Homes, which features 18 newly constructed Saratoga County houses by 14 area builders that are open to the public over three fall weekends. The homes highlight the latest construction techniques, products and furnishings by area designers and suppliers.

The awards ceremony—which had an elegant hoe-down theme complete with hay bales, a fiddler and a corn crop backdrop—was emceed by Liz Bishop of CBS 6 News.

Executive Director Barry Potoker told attendees that the Saratoga Builders Association is committed to “the growth, prosperity and quality of life of Saratoga County.” Hope Caprood and Cheryl Murphy spoke about how Rebuilding Together Saratoga and Habitat for Humanity, the two beneficiaries of the Showcase, have changed their lives.

Caprood, a single mother of five, turned to Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties when she was unable to get a conventional bank loan. When she got the call that she had been approved, she cried.

“We have our own place where we are making silly, happy, crazy, funny memories,” Caprood said. The family moved into the house that Habitat for Humanity had built for them in July. “This is our home and we are forever grateful.”

Murphy’s 35-year-old son has cerebral palsy, and her family was the recipient of a bathroom remodel and a Hoyer lift from Rebuilding Together Saratoga. Now, Murphy says, she and her wife don’t have to rely on their other sons to be around to help lift him. “He loves being able to get in and out of his bed, come out to his wheelchair in the living room,” Murphy said. “It’s been absolutely life changing for us.”

Bishop announced winners in eight categories for classic, executive and luxury homes; Realtor’s Choice and People’s Choice Awards are announced at the end of the Showcase.

The third and final Showcase weekend is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Tickets are $20 for entry to all 18 houses. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit saratogashowcaseofhomes.com.
