After reading 500 submitted scripts, a group of theater professionals have chosen a selection to be offered as staged readings at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady and Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany. The readings, presented as NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 6, will be performed by their writers Oct. 20 – 23 at both locations. The four-day festival will also include workshops, discussions and complimentary refreshments.
Notable on the festival docket are Judith Leora’s Show Pony, which shines a hard light on the modern workplace; Meridith Friedman’s Your Best One, a story about a serious health threat that reunites a broken-up couple; and Diane Baia Hale’s The Marble Muse, a historical riff based on the true story of author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fascination with young American sculptor Louise Lander.
Professor David Bunce of the Theatre Institute at Sage will make his debut performance in the festival. An actor and filmmaker best known in the Capital Region for his long stint as a company member of the New York State Theatre Institute, Bunce will present Red Maple: A Love Story for Empty Nesters, about a casual dinner party that goes south.
Day passes to the festival are $10 and are available at Proctors and Capital Rep, by phone at (518) 445-7469 or online. Admission for students with a valid ID is $5. For more information and for a complete schedule, visit capitalrep.org.
