The Saratoga 6: Elizabeth Sobol

6 questions for Saratoga’s most interesting people

With fresh energy and a great sense of community, Elizabeth Sobol has greeted her first summer as the newly minted president of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The former Manhattanite and Miami dweller discovered Saratoga has an allure all its own - and she can't wait to share it with broader audiences.

1. Tell us about your earliest Saratoga memory.

I came up for my first interview with the SPAC search committee early last summer. I arrived in on a cool, quiet Sunday evening in June. I knew nothing about Saratoga and just wandered up Broadway. Without knowing where I was going, I happened to turn right on Phila Street and passed by Lyrical Ballad. Left on Putnam. Then up to Broadway again, where I passed by Northshire Bookstore. Given that I am a book fanatic, that first hour of walking around gave me a hint that I might just be in heaven.

2. Which of our local nonprofits is most important to you?

Needless to say, Saratoga Performing Arts Center is the one that is most important to me! And apparently there are a lot of people who don't realize that we are a nonprofit. But there is an amazing network of organizations from Caffè Lena and Universal Preservation Hall, to Yaddo, Pitney Meadows and the Preservation Foundation that makes Saratoga the city I fell in love with.

3. Which spot in town serves your favorite drink or dish?

The bar at 15 Church - crispy oysters and a Manhattan.

4. This will be your first summer at the helm of SPAC. (Congratulations!) Describe the ideal SPAC experience in your own words.

Perfect weather, a perfectly crisp bottle of sauvignon blanc, the perfect confluence of natural beauty and manmade beauty.

5. What's the first app/website you open in the morning?

SoundsTrue.com for my morning qigong practice.

6. "I consider Saratoga's greatest hidden gem to be..."

Well, it's not so hidden, but the generous, kind, intellectually and culturally vibrant community.  S
