The Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS and the Capital Region United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots are taking over one woman’s effort to keep children warm this winter. Dawn Martin started “Uncle Shawn’s Hugs” in memory of her son, U. S. Marine Sergeant Shawn Martin, who was killed in Iraq in June 2007. The program supplies no-sew, hand-tied fleece blankets to children in need during the winter.
“Shawn always gave to everyone,” Martin said. “He also gave the best hugs.”
Due to increasing need and personal reasons, Martin is unable to manage the logistics of creating the blankets, so Clifton Park Halfmoon Emergency Corps created a task force to continue the program. The public is invited to the Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS for one of three day-long blanket assembling parties, where the program organizers hope to make over 500 blankets. The blankets will then be distributed to children during the Capital Region Toys for Tots 2017 Christmas season.
