There are few more historic sporting venues in the world than Saratoga Race Course. The venue is the fourth oldest horse racing venue in the United States, and it is considered to be the oldest major sporting location of any kind in the U.S.
Nowadays, the Spa hosts some of the most prestigious races on the annual calendar, with notable Grade Ones typically shaping the markets for Breeders’ Cup races, found here: https://www.twinspires.com/breeders-cup/
But, what are some of the iconic races on the Saratoga calendar and what have been some of the historic results that have played out on the track in New York?
Travers Stakes
The Travers Stakes is widely considered to be the standout race on the Saratoga calendar, and it is regarded as the Midsummer Derby. Horses aged three are able to run in the race, which currently boasts a purse of $1.25 million.
It is the summer highlight at the Spa, and features a final opportunity for the three-year-old pecking order to take shape before the Breeders’ Cup. It was first staged in 1864, making it the oldest stakes race in the U.S. for specifically runners aged three. High-quality runners such as Sovereignty, Essential Quality, and Arrogate have won the Travers since 2016.
Whitney Stakes
One of the most important races on the Saratoga calendar is staged in late July/early August, as the G1 Whitney Stakes is run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles. This race was first run in 1928, with horses aged four and older competing for their share of the $1 million purse. Its place as one of the most important races on the U.S. calendar is reflected by the fact that it is tied with the Kentucky Derby as the top Grade One race on the North American calendar outside of the Breeders’ Cup.
The Whitney has formed an important race on the road to sporting history for many equine stars throughout history, with winners such as White Abarrio and Knicks Go landing the Saratoga Grade One before scoring in the Breeders’ Cup Classic since 2021.
Coaching Club American Oaks
One of the newest prestigious races added to the Saratoga schedule is the Coaching Club American Oaks. This Grade One forms the second leg of the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, and it has been staged at the Spa since moving away from Belmont Park in 2010.
The Coaching Club American Oaks will see a field of fillies aged three compete over 1 1/8 miles, with recent greats in the division such as Thorpedo Anna, Nest, and Monomoy Girl all winning the Grade One. This year, Counting Stars was a dominant winner for the Mark Casse yard, before she finished third in the G1 Alabama Stakes.
Saratoga Derby
The Spa is a track that is a bucket list location for many passionate fans of the sport, ensuring that the G1 Saratoga Derby is typically a standout date in the diary for international raiders. This race was re-established in 2019 as a Grade One, run on the turf over a distance of 1 3/16 miles.
Horses aged three are able to compete, with the winner securing their berth in the W. S. Cox Plate in Australia following a ground-breaking partnership was announced between Moonee Valley Racing Club and Saratoga in 2023. Recent editions have been dominated by European raiders, with Hugo Palmer-trained Glacius landing the most recent renewal in 2026.
Graveyard of Champions
Saratoga has long been revered as the Graveyard of Champions, as superstar performers throughout history have seen their records dented with shock defeats at the Spa. That has made for lasting memories at the venue, with some of the world’s best thoroughbreds seeing their egos wounded in New York. But, who are some of the superstar equines that have been shockingly beaten at Saratoga?
Man o’War
Man o’War is widely considered to be one of the greatest thoroughbred racehorses of all-time, winning nine of his ten starts in 1919, which included victories in the Hopeful Stakes and Belmont Futurity. However, his first, and only career defeat, would come during the same season in the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga, beaten a neck by the aptly named Upset.
Gallant Fox
Gallant Fox was the dominant horse in the 1930 season, sweeping the Triple Crown in dominant fashion to become the second equine to achieve the feat. However, a first major blow would be suffered at Saratoga, as Gallant Fox could only finish eight lengths second behind 100/1 shot Jim Dandy in the Travers Stakes. He would later avenge defeat at the track by beating his elders in the Saratoga Cup.
Secretariat
Perhaps the most famous upset in Saratoga history came in 1973, as the legendary Secretariat was beaten on his first start after the Triple Crown sweep in the Whitney Stakes. Onion finished a length clear of one of the all-time greats, but unlike Gallant Fox, Secretariat never returned to the Spa, instead retiring after bouncing back with wins in the Canadian International, Marlboro Cup, and Man o’War Stakes.
