Saratoga Wine & Food Festival Returns To SPAC In October

It’s almost time to toast Saratoga’s annual Wine & Food Festival—but this year, Saratogians will have to wait a little bit longer than usual. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), which presents the event, has announced that, for the first time, the festival will take place a little later in the year (October 4-5) and be transformed into a celebration of the fall harvest season. In addition to the new autumnal aesthetic, this year’s festival will also highlight sustainable cooking and agricultural practices with an all-new “Cultivate Series” at various locations throughout Downtown Saratoga.

“This year’s festival will be a celebration of the rich cultural and culinary bounty of the region, with an underlying ethos of socially conscious cultivation and consumption,” SPAC’s President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol tells saratoga living. In that spirit, on day one (October 4) of this year’s Wine & Food Festival will offer an exciting, new themed Farm-to-Table Harvest Dinner, beginning at 7pm with live entertainment and music. All of the harvest-themed fun will be set in an enchanting environment resembling a magical forest. Those who purchase VIP tickets for the Friday event will have early access to the festivities in a dedicated VIP section, featuring top-shelf wines and a curated selection of delicious local fare.

The festival’s signature event, the Grand Tasting, takes place on October 5 from 12-4pm, and will feature gourmet tastings and bites of the best food from the Hudson Valley up to the Adirondacks and everything in between. Also, event-goers will be able to enjoy pours of local and international wines, liquors and craft beers, as well as live music and entertainment by local artists. VIP ticket holders will again get early access to the event as well as some special VIP experiences.

To make this year’s gourmet food showcase more epicurean than ever, SPAC has partnered with a host of important local institutions and businesses, including food caterers Rascal + Thorn, Lily and the Rose and Mazzone Hospitality; live entertainment by Caffè Lena; and sculptures and art provided by The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls (celebrity wedding and event planner Colin Cowie Lifestyle will once again provide decor). SPAC is also collaborating with Skidmore College to help create a new “Cultivate Series” from Sunday, September 29 through Thursday, October 3, offering an assortment of free cultural and educational events throughout the Spa City that focus on sustainable agriculture, environmental justice and health. (A full schedule will be announced later this summer.)

Just as in years past, the Saratoga Wine & Food Festival will also serve a charitable purpose. “As our primary fundraiser for educational programming, the weekend event is a festive way to support arts in the community and, for the first time, celebrate the beginning of the autumn harvest season,” says Sobol.

Tickets to the festival are now available at spac.org.

Comedian Patton Oswalt Bringing His Stand-Up Act To The Palace Theatre On July 25 (Exclusive)

It’s no exaggeration to say that Patton Oswalt is one of the hardest working comedians in show business. For younger audiences, Oswalt’s general hilariousness and irreverence has helped him amass 4.5 million followers on Twitter. He’s also logged a number of memorable acting gigs, including voicing lead (animated) character “Remy” in the Oscar-winning Pixar film Ratatouille and doing recent turns on multiple Emmy-winning HBO series Veep and the recent revival of cult favorite Veronica Mars. Older audiences might know him best as Spence from long-running TV sitcom The King of Queens (he appeared on 179 episodes). Additionally, Oswalt has won critical acclaim as a standup comedian (he’s garnered an Emmy and a Grammy for his comedy albums) and New York Times bestselling author (see: Zombie Spaceship Wasteland).

Thankfully, Oswalt won’t just be another tweet in our social feeds for much longer. He’ll be bringing his comedy show, Patton Oswalt Live!, to the Palace Theatre in Albany this Thursday, July 25, debuting an hour’s worth of all-new material. In fact, Oswalt’s show will mark his first-ever performance in the Capital Region.

A native of Virginia, Oswalt first tried his hand at standup during his student days as an English major at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. “I can’t remember a specific date, [but] I figured I’d try to turn what I liked doing into a vocation,” Oswalt tells saratoga living. After earning his degree in 1991, Oswalt dedicated himself to the craft. It took several years, but he landed his first onscreen TV role in 1994 in Comedy Central’s Small Doses, a short-lived prime-time series of mini-sitcoms. That same year, Oswalt also nabbed his first cameo as a video store clerk in the classic ’90s sitcom Seinfeld. (Coincidentally, Jerry Seinfeld will also be bringing his standup show to the Palace in October.) For Oswalt, getting to meet Seinfeld was a life-changing moment. “I auditioned for the role and got it, and we’ve been friends ever since,” Oswalt says. “His craftsmanship and joke writing are pretty much unmatched—no wasted words and maximum impact.”

It wouldn’t be until 1997 that Oswalt had his major breakout, appearing in his first big standup special, HBO’s Comedy Half-Hour. Since then, Oswalt has steadily built his résumé, becoming one of the most well-respected comedians of his generation.

However, all of the high points in Oswalt’s decades-long career couldn’t prepare him for the lowest of lows. In 2016, one day before the release of his Grammy-winning comedy album Talking for Clapping, tragedy struck. Oswalt’s wife of more than ten years, Michelle McNamara, a journalist and true crime author, passed away suddenly, leaving the comedian to care for the couple’s young daughter Alice. Though devastated, Oswalt remained surprisingly open about his grief and sense of loss both in interviews and on his Twitter feed, where he frequently posted touching remembrances and thoughts about his late wife. The following year, the comic released the critically acclaimed Netflix standup special Annihilation, in which he frankly discussed the loss of McNamara, battling his own depression and finding meaning in life again. “It was definitely cathartic doing that special,” says Oswalt. “I’ve always talked about what’s been going on with me, both personally and in a wider historical context, so it wasn’t really a ‘choice’ [to talk about it].”

The last few years have been a whirlwind for Oswalt. In addition to being nominated for two more Emmys and another Grammy, he remarried, wedding actress Meredith Salenger in 2017. Though not necessarily taking a break from show business, Oswalt is moving at a slightly more relaxed pace of late. “Right now, I’m focused just on a new Netflix special [that’s] shooting in September,” he says. That’s in addition to a new animated series on Hulu he’ll be writing for and producing called M.O.D.O.K. (short for Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing), produced in partnership with Marvel.

There are still tickets available for Thursday’s performance at the Palace. You can pick them up here.

How Caffè Lena’s $2 Million Renovation Sparked a Renaissance for the Historic Saratoga Venue

From the time it was hosting legendary folk artists such as Bob Dylan and Don McLean in the 1960s and ’70s up to 2016, Saratoga Springs’ historic music venue Caffè Lena looked a lot different. But with generous support, Caffè Lena was able to complete a $2 million renovation in 2017, expanding to 110 seats and installing a state-of-the-art sound system, among other upgrades. saratoga living recently talked with Nancy Kass, Caffè Lena’s director of communications and development, about the Saratoga venue’s transformation.

You caught shows at the “old” Caffè Lena. How much has the experience changed?
I’ve been an avid show-goer and supporter of Lena since 2001, when I moved to Saratoga. It always had this intimate feel. However, the shape of the room was a little awkward; the kitchen kind of sat in the middle of the listening space, and the acoustics weren’t great. Caffè Lena has evolved from being a simple coffeehouse to a state-of-the-art listening room that features extraordinary music in this intimate setting steeped in history.

Do the performers appreciate the new space?
The artists are blown away by the new space. The openness of the room, the warm colors, the lighting and the beautiful handmade lightbox murals impress their visual senses. And then when they begin to play and experience the state-of-the-art sound system and acoustics of the room, they are elated! And yet, underneath all the bells and whistles associated with the renovation, there lies a special reverence that the artists have for this place: They feel the history in the bricks that hold every note played here since 1960, and this reverence is reflected in their performance.

I take it the renovation’s allowed Caffè Lena to book more name acts. How are attendance numbers?
A good percentage of our shows sell out these days and yes, we’ve been able to bring in bigger names, such as Judy Collins. (She’s playing four sold-out shows August 17-19.) The renovated space makes every show sparkle; it has greatly impacted the artists as well as the audience.

Now that the new Caffè Lena’s a couple years old, is there anything else you’d like to add or change about the space?
We have a much grander entryway than we did in the old days. That atrium has a lot of a room, and we have dreams of doing more with it, and maybe even the little courtyard area just outside as well. Otherwise, for the near future, we don’t feel that the space needs any further changes.

Schenectady Teen Makes A Splash On Hit Netflix Series ‘Stranger Things’

One Schenectady teenager has just made herself millions of nerdy fans. In a scene-stealing moment from Season 3 of Netflix’s Stranger Things, which premiered on the streaming service July 4 weekend, main character Dustin jumps on the walkie with his new girlfriend, Suzie, and shares a hilarious duet of The NeverEnding Story theme with her (see below). At this point, actor Gaten Matarazzo, who portrays Dustin, is a household name, but you would’ve likely had to search IMDB.com to figure out who plays Suzie. Locals Upside Downers will be surprised to find that she’s played by none other than 16-year-old Schenectady native Gabriella Pizzolo, who already has quite the performing arts résumé under her belt.

Pizzolo, who’s made a name for herself on Broadway and performed at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), is proud of her Capital Region roots. “Schenectady is great, and I couldn’t think of a better place to grow up,” Pizzolo tells saratoga living. Like a lot of performers, Pizzolo got her start in local community theater, landing roles in the Schenectady Light Opera Company and Classic Theater Guild, also in Schenectady. Pizzolo developed the singing voice that made her a star on Stranger Things from voices lessons at Craig Elementary in Niskayuna, where she also acted in school plays. “The music teachers there were very helpful, and they taught me so much,” says Pizzolo. “I’m incredibly grateful for them.”

Pizzolo also credits a pair of local venues for helping spark her initial love of the theater. “I absolutely love Proctors and all its plays, and SPAC too,” she says. In 2013, Pizzolo made her SPAC debut in a performance of George Balanchine’s Garland Dance with the New York City Ballet. “Having an outlet for theater and performance so close to me really enhanced my love for theater,” says Pizzolo. “And I got to see what happens both backstage and onstage.” The Schenectady native still buys her pointe shoes from Saratoga Dance, Etc. on Church Street in Saratoga Springs. “One of my favorite things about Saratoga is the pointe shoe statues that are all around town,” she says.

In 2013, the same year she debuted at SPAC, Pizzolo broke through on Broadway. At just the age of ten, she starred as the titular character in the hit Broadway show Matilda the Musical, an adaptation of the beloved young adult novel by Roald Dahl. “I felt so lucky and so honored to be on Broadway,” says Pizzolo. “I definitely couldn’t have done it without everybody around me.” That big break, it turns out, almost didn’t happen. Pizzolo was passed over the first time she auditioned for the role. But that didn’t stop her from pursuing her dream. When the Broadway role became available again, she auditioned a second time and nailed it. “I like to live in the mindset that rejection makes people stronger,” says Pizzolo. “So whenever rejection occurs, I try to use it and turn it into something good.”

Pizzolo ended up portraying Matilda for nearly a year. While in New York City, the Upstate New York native met another young, rising Broadway actor in Matarazzo. “A lot of the kids on Broadway would meet up and hang out,” says Pizzolo. “So he and I are great friends.” Flash-forward just five years and that connection to Matarazzo helped Pizzolo land the Stranger Things audition. “The [NeverEnding Story] scene was so well written that I could imagine watching it,” says Pizzolo, who’s been a fan of Stranger Things since it first landed on Netflix in 2016. “I recorded what I was thinking in my head and sent it [in].” Just a few weeks later, Pizzolo heard back; she’d been cast as Suzie.

Though not even three minutes long, that too-cute duet between Pizzolo and Matarazzo—which, by the way, helped save the world (at least in Stranger Things)—has proven to be a fan favorite as well as an internet sensation. Actress Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the show, even dropped her own #NeverEndingChallenge on Instagram, inviting fans to show off their dance moves while watching the scene. The viral hashtag subsequently broke the Internet, even inspiring late night talk show rivals Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon to take on the challenge together. “One of my favorite things about the entire series is seeing what everyone else thinks about that scene,” says Pizzolo.

For Stranger Things fans searching for clues about Season 4, Pizzolo tells saratoga living that she doesn’t know yet if Suzie will be back, but she says she’d love to take on the role again. As for any other big projects she might have on the horizon, Pizzolo says she’s taking a bit of a breather. “Right now, I’m just focusing on enjoying summer vacation and becoming a junior,” she says. Hey, after helping save the world, who can blame her?

Irad and José Ortiz Honored At 26th Annual Siro’s Cup

On July 10, Siro’s Restaurant‘s 26th Annual Newton Plaza Siro’s Cup, a staple of the Saratoga racing season, honored jockeys Irad and José Ortiz and raised funds to support the Center for Disability Services. Despite the restaurant’s recent ownership change, the evening went off without a hitch, featuring a silent auction, music by Funk Evolution and food provided by the new head chef, David Britton.

The Center for Disability Services is one of Upstate New York’s largest organizations supporting individuals with disabilities. The foundation has helped more than 12,000 people with programs and services that support more than 300 different diagnoses of disabilities.

Best Western: Double M’s Summer Rodeos Are An Authentic Slice Of ‘Yeehaw’ Culture

Hey, ya’ll. It’s time to dust off that Stetson and pair of leather chaps. “Yeehaw” culture, or a revival of the country-western aesthetic, has been dominating social feeds, topping the music charts (see: Lil Nas X’s record-tying hit “Old Town Road”) and influencing modern fashion (country music princess Kacey Musgraves, who won four Grammy Awards this past year, including Album of the Year, has been at the forefront of the movement). Lady Gaga has gone yeehaw (Joanne), Miley Cyrus has, too, (Younger Now), so why can’t I? Where in Upstate New York can I live my true yeehaw fantasy? And, no, I’m not talking about attending a Luke Bryan’s concert at SPAC.

The actual answer? The Double M Western Store, a family-run shop located on the outskirts of Ballston Spa, which not only offers the latest in yeehaw fashion, but also public rodeos on its adjacent property every Friday through August 30. I attended Double M’s very first rodeo of the season and was struck by the authenticity of the experience. Coming complete with bull riders, cowboys and cowgirls, rodeo-goers are met with tradition and western nostalgia at every turn. With its horse and bull-riders coming from all over the Capital Region, Double M cultivates a community of local country lovers with its weekly summer rodeos. So, if you’re looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of Saratoga Springs—i.e. all those other horses and riders—take a trip 15 minutes south to the Double M Rodeo.

Rodeo tickets cost $17 for adults, $10 for kids under 12, with season passes available for purchase as well. Gates open at 6pm with the rodeo starting promptly at 8pm. Concessions are available and parking is free.

Still not sure whether you want to get your yeehaw on? Click on the above gallery of photographs taken by saratoga living‘s Eric Huss at a later rodeo. (For more of Huss’ work, click here.)

Saratoga Race Course 2019: Scenes From The Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks

Despite oppressive temperatures all weekend in Saratoga Springs—and the preemptive cancellation of Saratoga Race Course’s Saturday card by the New York State Racing Association, due to the heat—Sunday’s card when off without a hitch, as did the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.

The Chad Brown-trained Guarana came out victorious, with José Ortiz aboard, to remain undefeated. (Go to DRF.com to see a video recap of the race.) saratoga living‘s photographer Billy Francis LeRoux was at the main track for the entirety of the race and shot a number of photos of the action. Marylou Whitney, ‘The Queen Of Saratoga,’ Dies At 93

Saratoga Springs’ collective heart is broken. Marylou Whitney, the “Queen of Saratoga,” has died at the age of 93.

The New York Racing Association broke the news this afternoon at Saratoga Race Course and followed it up with a tweet that read:

“Our hearts are broken, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Marylou Whitney at the age of 93. The Queen of Saratoga was one of racing’s most dedicated supporters and a tremendous ambassador for the industry. We send our condolences to her family and friends.”

Social media, especially Twitter, has become a makeshift memorial to Whitney.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, where the late Whitney’s husband, John Hendrickson is president:

“The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame extends its deepest condolences to the family of Marylou Whitney and her husband, John Hendrickson, on the passing of Mrs. Whitney. A kindhearted friend to the Museum, the sport of thoroughbred racing, and the Saratoga Springs community, Mrs. Whitney was a beloved and irreplaceable icon whose extraordinary legacy will have a lasting effect on future generations.”

While many will remember Whitney as the consummate Saratoga socialite, she was much, much more than just that to the city of Saratoga. She was a generous philanthropist, giving to innumerable charities; a patron of the arts and Saratoga Race Course; and a talented horse owner and breeder, one who was set to receive the Sport of King’s highest honor this August, when she was going to be inducted into the horse racing Hall of Fame. For that reason (and many more), saratoga living included Whitney on our inaugural Power List.

For more on Whitney’s incredible life lived, read saratoga living Contributor (and former Editor) Maria McBride Bucciferro’s feature from last year’s “The Races!” Issue here.
